Four polders

Eight greenhouse companies in Vierpolders (municipality of Brielle, South Holland) have taken the initiative to jointly develop a geothermal project to provide heat to their greenhouses. Gaia Energy is project manager and mining operator for this initiative.

About the location

Geothermal energy Vierpolders is a special project for us because it was the first project for us where we supervised all phases of a project. We work very closely with the gardeners in Vierpolders who have completely outsourced the project and management activities to us. Gaia Energy is an operator and point of contact for the competent authority and its supervisor of State Mines Supervision.

The surface in Brielle is particularly suitable for the use of geothermal energy. At a depth of 2200 meters, there is a porous layer of sand with water of approximately 85 degrees. To use the heat from this water, two sources were drilled (doublet): one to pump the hot water up and one through which the cold water is pumped back (injection well).
