Sustainable heat from Ede's subsurface

Ede is exploring how geothermal energy can contribute to a sustainable heat supply for homes and businesses. Recent geological research indicates that the region's subsurface offers promising prospects for geothermal extraction. The Aardwarmte Ede project is therefore focusing on developing a geothermal source at Maanderdijk, which could supply heat to Ede's district heating network in the future. Gaia Energy is playing an executive role in this project, supporting the development of the geothermal source based on its experience with geothermal projects throughout the Netherlands.

Promising results from the subsurface

In recent years, extensive research has been conducted into the geological structure of the subsurface in and around Ede. This involved using regional studies, seismic data, and the results of the SCAN exploration well in Ede. These studies show that there are rock layers at greater depths that may be suitable for geothermal extraction. The results form an important basis for the further development of the project and confirm that geothermal energy can be a promising sustainable heat source for the Foodvalley region. The advantage of geothermal energy is that heat is produced locally, is independent of weather conditions, and can contribute to reducing the use of fossil fuels.

Permits available for public review

Permits have been requested from both the municipality and the national government for the development of Aardwarmte Ede. The draft decisions are currently available for public review for a period of six weeks. During this time, residents, businesses, and other stakeholders can view the documents, ask questions, or submit feedback. The project is currently still in a preparatory phase. No drilling activities are being carried out at this time. The coming period will focus primarily on providing information, permit procedures, and further technical preparation.

Working together on knowledge and understanding

We believe it is important that local residents and other interested parties are well-informed about geothermal energy and the developments within the project. That is why we are committed to open communication and sharing research results, permit information, and project updates.

On July 6, 2026 an information market organized by the Ministry of Climate and Green Growth took place regarding the Aardwarmte Ede project. During this meeting, visitors were able to speak with representatives from the ministry, Gaia Energy, MPD Groene Energie, TNO, the State Supervision of Mines (SodM), and the municipality of Ede. There was a great deal of interest, and visitors took the opportunity to ask questions about the subsurface, the technology, safety, the permit procedure, and the further planning.

The conversations during the information market show that there is engagement with the project and a need for clear information. Gaia Energy values this dialogue and remains committed to answering questions as thoroughly as possible and actively informing the community throughout the further development of the project.

The draft start permit is available for public review until August 13, 2026 . During this period, anyone can view the permit documents and submit a formal response if they wish. The responses received will be taken into account by the ministry in the further decision-making process.
