Geothermal Ede is working on the development of a local, sustainable heat source for homes and businesses in Ede. Research into the Ede subsurface shows good potential for geothermal energy. Gaia Energy is a partner in Geothermal Ede and contributes its expertise to the development, realization, and future operation of the geothermal source.

Sustainable heat from the Ede subsurface

In Ede, work is underway to develop a geothermal source at the Maanderdijk. The goal is to utilize heat from the deep subsurface for Ede's existing heat network in the future. This would allow geothermal energy to become a local and sustainable addition to the heat sources already used for the network. Geothermal energy is continuously available and independent of sun, wind, or season. As such, it can make a significant contribution to a reliable and future-proof heat supply and to reducing the use of fossil fuels.

Research confirms potential for geothermal energy

In recent years, extensive research has been conducted into the geological structure of the subsurface in and around Ede. This has included regional studies, seismic data, and the results of the SCAN research borehole. The research results provide greater insight into the rock layers beneath Ede and confirm the potential for geothermal development. This knowledge forms an important basis for the design of the geothermal source and the further technical development of the project.

Careful development

A geothermal project goes through several stages before heat can actually be produced. In addition to subsurface research, this involves technical preparation, permits, safety, financing, site preparation, and ultimately the construction of the wells and surface installation. Geothermal Ede is currently in this development phase. In 2026, important steps were taken in the permitting process and further project preparation. Safety, diligence, and reliable future heat production are central to every step.

Collaboration within Geothermal Ede

Geothermal Ede is being developed by MPD Groene Energie, EBN, and Gaia Energy. The partners each contribute their own knowledge and experience to bring the project from development to actual heat production. Gaia Energy brings its expertise across the entire geothermal chain to the project, from knowledge of the subsurface and technical project development to realization, operations, and maintenance. Even after construction, Gaia Energy will remain involved as the operator, responsible for safe and reliable production as well as the management and maintenance of the geothermal installation.

Engaging with the community

Providing good information and maintaining contact with the community are important parts of the development of Geothermal Ede. On July 6, 2026, an information market was held at the Mauritskazerne regarding the draft decision for the start-up permit. More than 150 residents, entrepreneurs, and other interested parties attended the meeting. They were able to speak with representatives from the ministry, the State Supervision of Mines (SodM), TNO – Geological Survey of the Netherlands, the municipality of Ede, and Geothermal Ede. A wide range of questions were asked about topics including the subsurface, safety, technology, permits, and the next steps of the project. These conversations are valuable and help to keep the community well-informed throughout the further development.
