Safety & Responsibility

Discover our innovative and sustainable geothermal projects that contribute to a green future.

Safety begins before we start drilling

At Gaia Energy, safety is the foundation of every geothermal project. From initial soil surveys to the daily operation of our facilities, we take responsibility for people, the environment, and the surrounding area.

Safety

Safety is a continuous process

Safety is not a retrospective check, but an integral part of every project. That is why we work according to a fixed approach in which risks are identified and managed as early as the design phase.

Our projects are developed in accordance with applicable laws and regulations and are supervised by, among others, the State Supervision of Mines (SodM), environmental agencies, and other competent authorities.

Our approach

Safety always comes first

Research

We carefully map out the subsurface, the surrounding area, and potential risks before a project begins.

Safe design

Our wells, installations, and processes are designed according to the highest safety standards.

Permits and assessment

We only begin implementation once all necessary permits have been granted and independent bodies have given their approval.

Safe construction

During construction, we work according to strict safety procedures. Our employees and contractors are continuously supervised and monitored.

Monitoring and management

Once commissioned, our installations are monitored 24 hours a day. In addition, Gaia Energy specialists conduct periodic inspections to detect any anomalies at an early stage.

Continuous improvement

Every inspection, test, or maintenance activity provides new insights. This allows us to continuously improve our installations and work methods.

Safety for people and the environment

Safety goes beyond just technology

That is why we pay close attention to:

  • subsurface protection;
  • groundwater protection;
  • secure well integrity;
  • environment;
  • occupational safety;
  • stakeholder management;
  • transparent communication.

Safety requires collaboration

Collaboration with regulators

We work closely with partners including:

  • State Supervision of Mines (SodM)
  • Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate
  • Environmental services
  • Municipalities
  • Provinces
  • Safety regions

Frequently asked questions

Here you will find answers to frequently asked questions about safety, monitoring, and the measures Gaia Energy takes to protect people, the environment, and the surrounding area.

Is geothermal energy safe?

Yes. Geothermal energy is a safe and proven technology that has been used in the Netherlands for decades. Projects are developed in accordance with strict laws and regulations and are supervised by authorities such as the State Supervision of Mines (SodM). Safety is a priority throughout the entire lifecycle of a project: from design and construction to operation and maintenance.

Can geothermal energy cause earthquakes?

Geothermal energy does not involve removing large volumes from the subsurface. The pumped water is returned to the same reservoir after use. Consequently, the risk of perceptible vibrations is extremely low. Nevertheless, the subsurface and the facilities are monitored continuously, and risks are thoroughly assessed in advance.

How is the quality of the wells checked?

Before a geothermal well is commissioned, it undergoes extensive testing and inspection. Periodic checks are also performed during operation to ensure the integrity of the wells. Furthermore, pressure, temperature, and other key parameters are monitored continuously.

What happens during maintenance?

Regular maintenance is essential for a safe and reliable facility. Maintenance is carefully planned and carried out according to established procedures. Where necessary, temporary measures are put in place to ensure that the heat supply to customers remains uninterrupted.

Is the facility monitored continuously?

Yes. Our facilities are digitally monitored 24/7. In addition, our technical operations staff conduct regular inspection rounds. By combining digital monitoring with physical checks, any anomalies can be detected and resolved at an early stage.

How is groundwater protected?

Geothermal energy uses closed-loop systems where pumped water is returned to the same deep geological layer after use. During drilling, the various groundwater layers are carefully isolated from one another using multiple layers of steel casing and cement, ensuring that shallow groundwater remains protected.

Who supervises geothermal projects?

Our approach focuses on simplicity, efficiency, and cost control. Wherever possible, we apply a standardized well architecture and optimize performance to get the most out of every borehole. We manage the entire lifecycle of each well, aiming for long-term, reliable operation—even after the warm water front reaches the injected cold water front.

What happens if a malfunction occurs?

Our installations are monitored continuously. In the event of a malfunction, pre-established procedures are activated, and a team of specialists is ready to resolve the situation safely and quickly. Where necessary, alternative heat supplies can be deployed to ensure security of supply.
